California Wild Photo Competition

The high standard of the 300 entries into California Wild's first Photo Contest was extremely gratifying, although it made the selection process that much more difficult. "There were many signs," says wildlife photographer and guest judge, Michael Sewell, "of people using sophisticated picture-taking techniques such as graduated neutral density filters and fill-flash."

On this first occasion, we kept the categories simple: California Wildlife, California Plants, the Ocean Realm, and a fourth category for juniors under 18. First Prizes ($300), Second Prizes ($200), and Third Prizes ($100 in gift certificates from Adolf Gasser) were awarded in each of the adult categories. A First Prize was awarded in the Junior category. The Grand Prize was a Nikon Coolpix 990 digital camera courtesy of eframes.com.

The eleven winners shown here, together with ten who received Honorable Mention, will be shown in an exhibit at the California Academy of Sciences opening February, 2001.

Contest judges were Michael Sewell, co-photographer of Bay Area Wild, and sole photographer of an illustrated edition of Aldo Leopold's A Sand County Almanac to be published in 2001; Dong Lin, Academy Senior Photographer and photographer of One American Reality; Exhibits Chairman Linda Kulik; and California Wild's Art Director, Susan Schneider and Editor, Keith Howell.
