ABOUT CALIFORNIA WILD
California
Wild
California Wild is the quarterly
natural history magazine of the California Academy of Sciences, the oldest
scientific institution in the West. Our stories focus on the wildlife,
history, and environment of the West, but often roam much farther afield.
Our story topics range from astronomy to ants, interviews with leading
researchers and the ways in which humans are changing the natural environment.
Each story is accompanied by images from some of the finest nature photographers
working today. Founded as Pacific Discovery, we have surprised
and delighted millions of readers since 1948.
Internships
California Wild offers four
unpaid internships per year. Interns will be introduced to all aspects
of magazine production, from story selection and assignments to editing,
production, and design. Many interns have the opportunity to write one
or more articles for the magazine. Interns may also be asked to help out
with a variety of administrative, production, and editing tasks. The intern's
primary responsibilities include:
Writing news items for This
Week in California Wild. Each week, we summarize and publish
up to eight science news articles into 150-200-word items. These are published
on the Academy's Web site with links to source stories.
Reviewing author queries. Each year, California Wild receives
dozens of story ideas and completed manuscripts from aspiring writers
around the world. Interns help select the right mix of stories for upcoming
issues of the magazine.
Reviewing manuscripts. Learn to think like an editor. Read through
commissioned manuscripts and suggest ways to improve stories.
Searching for photos. California Wild works with some
of the best wildlife photographers in the business. We take pride in the
quality of the images we publish, and work hard to locate the best illustrations
to complement our editorial content. Interns will learn the elements of
conducting a professional photo search, be exposed to copyright and usage
agreements and will be in a position to observe what it takes to be a
photo editor.
Internships generally last one academic quarter (10-12 weeks), but starting
and ending dates are flexible. Applicants should demonstrate an interest
in science and science journalism. Interns should be prepared to devote
a minimum of eight hours per week to the magazine. Partial days are acceptable.
