Based on the "Osmerus radiis pinnae anae undecim" of Artedi 1738:10 [ref. 30578] and Artedi 1738:22 [ref. 30349], which were based on the "Lacertus peregrinus vel rubri maris" of Gesner 1558:468 [ref. 30350] and Gesner 1598:45 [ref. 37990], and the "Saurus" of Salviani 1558:242b, 243a, Pl. 239 [ref. 30229], Aldrovandi 1638: 276, Pl. 277 (left figure) [ref. 37991] and Jonston 1649: Pl. 21 (fig. 12) [30579], the "Saurus Salviani, tarantula romae" of Willughby 1686: app, p. 29 [ref. 30164] and Ray 1713:66 [ref. 30231]. Habitat: marine.
