Zoology v. 12 (pt 3); ref. 3634] Cargados Carajos Island, Indian Ocean, depth 20-30 fathoms. Holotype (unique): BMNH 1908.3.23.261. Type catalog: Fricke 1982:68 [ref. 5432]. Synonymous with Callionymus maldivensis Regan 1908 that appeared in the same publication; Fricke 1980:88 [ref. 1500] acted as first reviser giving preference to gardineri. •Valid as Callionymus gardineri Regan 1908 -- (Fricke 1980:88 [ref. 1500], Fricke 1982:68 [ref. 5432], Fricke 1983:366 [ref. 8349], Dor 1984:235 [ref. 29757], Fricke 1986:771 [ref. 5653], Goren & Dor 1994:62 [ref. 25356], Fricke 1999:492 [ref. 24106], Fricke 2002:22 [ref. 26547], Manilo & Bogorodsky 2003:S117 [ref. 27377], Fricke et al. 2014:10 [ref. 33442], Fricke & Quang 2018:442 [ref. 35976], Golani & Fricke 2018:145 [ref. 36273], Psomadakis et al. 2020:544 [ref. 37272] as cf. gardineri, Fricke & Anderson 2022:451 [ref. 39659]). Current status: Valid as Callionymus gardineri Regan 1908. Callionymidae. Distribution: Red Sea; western Indian Ocean: Gulf of Aden, East Africa and Natal (South Africa) to Comoro Islands, Seychelles, Saint Brandon's Shoals and Maldives. Habitat: marine.
