Figured in Lacepède 1801: Pl. 32 (fig. 2) [ref. 2710] but with vernacular name. Neotype as BPBM 15921 was designated by Gon 1987:141 [ref. 6706]; Randall et al. 1990 [ref. 14259] did not accept the neotype designation as valid, but we find no reason to reject the neotype designation: it was done in a "critical study of the nominal species-group in question" and the specimen was adequately identified as the neotype ("data and description sufficient to ensure recognition of the specimen designated").
