Description | Woman’s manta made from a rectangular wedding robe that is woven of cotton in a balanced plainweave technique; At each corner the selvage and end cords are braided together into short tassels; In accordance with Hopi tradition, at some time after its use in a wedding, this robe was later embroidered so it could be worn on festive and ceremonial occasions; A band of alternating black and green panels incorporating negative zigzag lines is embroidered along each long side of the original robe, with a slightly different pattern and layout in each band; The band along the bottom edge also shows five diamond-with-rectangle motifs (in colors of green, red, yellow, blue, and pink) with a group of three black stacked triangles above each one. | |
