Description Rectangular shawl woven on back strap loom in warp-faced plainweave tapestry; Warps are dyed in ikat technique before they are placed on loom to produced the final design, known as “chahuarquingo” (literal translation: corn ear worm) or “mariposa”, comprising an all over pattern alternating dark blue and light blue areas; Ends of warp threads are knotted together at either end in overhead knotting technique to form crochet-like section with peacocks in the design, and finally terminate in long white fringes; Shawls of this type are worn by women on Sundays and fiestas or when going to town or market; Yarns are wrapped and dyed by women, who also warp the loom; Men actually weave the shawl and then women do the finishing overhead knotting.
