Description Woman’s rectangular shawl woven on back strap loom in warp-faced plainweave tapestry; Warps are dyed in ikat technique before they are placed on loom to produced the final design, known as “cocos” or coconuts, comprising an all over diamond network pattern in dark blue on a light blue background; Each diamond shape encloses a cross-like arrangement of four elongated and irregularly shaped dark blue motifs; Ends of warp threads are knotted together at either end in overhead knotting technique to form crochet-like section, terminating in long light blue fringes augmented with white threads; Shawls of this type are worn by poorer women as adornment and as carrying cloths for babies or bulky items; Yarns are wrapped and dyed by women, who also warp the loom; Men actually weave the shawl and then women do the finishing overhead knotting.
