Description | Rectangular carrying cloth woven on back strap loom in in warp-faced plainweave tapestry; Warps are dyed in ikat technique before they are placed on loom to produced the final design, which comprises all over negative pattern of parallel columns of asymmetrical crosses that are evenly spaced along white bars; Band of negative arrow motifs runs along each side of the cloth; Approx. 18 cm warp threads are exposed at each end beyond the woven section, and at the very end of the carrying cloth the warp yarns turn around four undyed weft yarns, which keep the ends in place; Carrying cloths of this type are used by both men and women in the Cañar region; Yarns are wrapped and dyed by women, who also warp the loom; Men do the actually weave and women do any finishing techniques, such as overhead knotting or fringe (not present on this example). | |
