| Description | Urn for secondary burial, carved from a large piece of coral in the form of a hollowed rectangular box with open top; Separate removable lid extends over edges of box and is peaked to resemble a house roof; NB: The two urns in this collection were both uninhabited when collected in 1960; the site had been abandoned generations earlier, and the urns had been disrupted and washed out by numerous typhoons over the years; Additionally, such urns were used as secondary repositories after the deceased was laid in a tomb; After a time in the urns, the bones would be cremated and scattered in the ocean; The lid on this urn appears very small in relation to urn, suggesting the two were possibly not originally associated with each other. | |
