Description | Large cylindrical carrying basket with conical base, woven almost entirely in open plain twining except for first few centimeters at basket start which are in closed plain twining; warp and weft material is rye grass stems; Warps are parallel on base and change on the sides to paired warps in which the fibers in each pair are diverted alternately to the left or right in each succeeding row of twining; Warps are braided at rim and then incorporated into a very heavy braided coil above rim that is joined to rim at regular intervals and extends an additional 95 cm beyond one complete revolution for use as an adjustable length handle; Designs on upper sides of basket are woven of worsted wool yarn in false embroidery technique and consist of 4 parallel bands, each 3 twined rows wide; The two inner bands are blue and the upper and lower bands are red. | |
