Description | Round jar-shaped basket with flat base; flaring lower sides expanding to mid-section and then taper to form a high shoulder and a short wide constricted neck with everted rim, woven in coiled technique over bundle foundation; Warp material is bear grass stems and primary weft material is split sun bleached yucca leaves; Designs are woven of black devil's claw pods and consist of a large geometric motif (possibly representing a stylized bird-in-flight or a saguaro cactus?) repeated four times around the lower half of the basket, and a band of four crosses or coyote tracks around the neck; Rim coil is decorated with a widely spaced, diagonal overstitch of devil's claw. | |
