Description | Round plaque woven entirely in wicker technique over multiple warps; At the rim, one warp stem from each warp group is folded over and incorporated into a bundle that is coil-wrapped with undyed yucca leaves; Warp material is sumac shoots and primary weft material is rabbitbrush stems; Design consists of single stylized image of Tsil (Chili Katsina), a runner who stuffs chili peppers into the mouth of anyone who loses a race with the katsina; Figure is woven entirely in checkerboard pattern of dyed orange and black rabbitbrush stems, against natural colored background; Black and orange border encircles rim of plaque; Baskets with this particular figure were woven for a very short time in the late 1800s and early 1900s. | |
