Description | Composite fishing lure and hook comprising an elongated shaft that is cut from a pearl oyster shell and has a squared off lower end and gradually tapers to a point at the upper end; Lateral edges are carefully shaped; Series of shallow notches are cut along each lateral edge near base and a separate upward curving ivory hook is secured perpendicular to the shaft, with cotton string that is wrapped around both the hook and the shaft, as well as through a hole that is drilled through the center of the hook; A heavier piece of cotton string is also looped through the hole in the hook and then extends to the top of the shaft where it passes through another drilled hole; The cotton string that secures the hook to the shaft also extends upward along the heavier string and is wrapped around it in two places to keep the two pieces together; The doubled heavier cord is also wrapped with additional cotton string above the top of the shaft. | |
