Description | Large deep round basket with flat base and flaring sides; Base of basket is woven in alternating rows of plain twining and simple plaiting, with single row of 3-strand twining along juncture of base and sides; Sides are woven entirely in plain twining; Warp and weft material is spruce roots; Designs are woven of dyed spruce roots and undyed and dyed bear grass leaves; Designs on base consist of 2 concentric bands wherein the twined rows are woven of dyed green spruce roots; The row of 3-strand twining along juncture of base and sides is woven of dyed blue (?) spruce roots; Two wide plain twined bands woven of dyed blue (?) spruce roots encircle sides of basket, separated by plain bands; Each of the blue bands has single row upper and lower red framing lines, and each is oversewn on exterior in false embroidery technique with bear grass leaves, showing orange and red arrows (alternating in colors and pointing up or down) that are outlined in partial triangles and rectangles in undyed bear grass; Plain band between primary bands is also decorated on exterior in false embroidery design of elongated terraced motifs in orange, green, and black; Plain bands above and below dyed blue bands each contain a narrow red band woven of dyed spruce roots in plain twining, and narrow plain twined band just below rim mixes dyed red and black spruce roots. | |
