Description | Small basket fashioned from single sheet of birch bark that has been cut and folded to form a rectangular base with 2 short and 2 long side flaps, all of which are folded up, overlapped, and stitched up the sides in a split stitch technique, using split willow (?) shoots; Exterior side of bark sheet is turned to inside of basket; Sides of basket slope inward as they rise toward the round rim; Rim is reinforced with additional rod around its exterior which is coil-wrapped with additional split willow (?) shoots; Cluster of oak leaves is lightly incised on two sides of basket and painted or stained dark brown, as is the exterior base and the two short side flaps. | |
