Description | Large rectangular fragment of kapa, made by beating strip of bark into very thin sheet and then overlapping the sheets to form a larger sheet; Extant fragment is a pale tan color overall and bears a watermark pattern of an all over network of small diamonds with a dot in the center of each diamond, known as "maka upena" or "eyes in the net", referring to a fishing net so filled with fish that the fishes' eyes are pressed against the net; Watermark pattern is pink, possibly derived from "ohelo berry"; Fragment has been cut along all four edges. | |
