Materials Cattail (Typha angustifolia) stems; Willow (Salix sp.) shoots; Devil's claw (Martynia sp.) pods
Description Very large, deep round basket with small diameter flat base and rounded sides that rise to a very wide mouth; Basket is woven in coiled technique over a bundle foundation; Warp material is split cattail stems and primary weft materials is peeled and split willow shoots; Designs are woven of black devil's claw pods and include large solid black round area that covers entire base and lower sides of basket; Design on mid- and upper sides of basket comprises 6 paired columns of diagonally stacked squares which first rise in one direction, then turn in the opposite direction; Individual squares on one side of each column are joined by horizontal lines to a square in the next adjacent column (either higher or lower) forming an overall terraced pattern; Final rim coil is woven entirely of black devil's claw; Single small loop woven of devil's claw is sewn to upper exterior side of basket.
