| Description | Press-molded Daruma rattle depicting a kappa, a spirit that usually lives in lakes, ponds or streams and has both Shinto and Buddhist attributes and are usually depicted the the body of a tortoise and a cavity or bald spot atop the head which holds its strength-giving fluid; Kappa are generally the size of a small child but incredibly strong, capable of dragging horses cattle, and humans into the water and draining them of life; This example is painted green all over with a tonsure of black hair, yellow and black eyes, and flesh-colored ears and nose; Blue tortoise shell is painted on its back; Rattle is designed to always stand upright. | |
