| Description | Ornament consisting of two clay rattles each containing a clay ball to produce noise; One rattle bears two Japanese symbols on a yellow background and the other shows two Japanese symbols on a red background; Both rattles are tied with string to a length of 2-ply fiber cordage that is twisted into a double loop and whose ends are secured with a green paper strip, imprinted in Japanese script, possibly with the name of the shrine where this ornament was collected; A second length of 2-ply cordage is also looped behind the first one and also through the green paper strip, terminating at the top in a papier mâché head with red and black painted facial features, a tuft of brown coconut fiber “hair”, and a length of commercial red and white multi-plied nylon cordage around the neck. | |
