Description | Rectangular basket with flat base and vertical sides, apparently woven around framework that includes structural bars along all edges and upright corner supports; Warp and weft material is rye grass stems and the underlying framework is an unidentified wood; Basket is woven primarily in closed plain twining, with a row of 3-strand twining along the top and bottom of each side panel; Warp or weft fibers pass over or behind side frame bars or corner uprights before continuing in their respective roles on adjacent panel; Rim is everted and forms flat shoulder; Pair of short bail handles are attached to loops on long sides of rim opposite each other; Designs on sides of basket are woven of worsted wool yarn and white seal gut in false embroidery technique and consist of bands of concentric terraced diamonds in colors of pink and blue or pink and brown, all between upper and lower framing lines of black and white rectangles(on lower line) or brown and white rectangles (on upper line) along dashed pink line; Matching rectangular lid is woven and decorated similarly to basket, with additional framework bar running down center length; Single loop on edge of basket is similar to those on basket, but no indication if or how lid was attached. | |
