Description | Square basket with flat base and vertical sides with rounded corners that rise to wide round mouth; Warp material is cedar bark; Base is woven primarily in plaited technique (over 2 / under 2), using cedar bark slats for both warp and weft; Several rows of plain twining, using rye grass stems as the weft, complete the base; Sides of basket are woven in bands of wrapped twining that use bear grass leaves and raffia leaves as the weft, alternating with bands of bear grass leaves that are threaded in and out of the warps in a ribbon beading technique; Warp ends are folded over at rim and braided; Designs are woven of dyed bear grass leaves or raffia grass leaves and include primary band around midsection, showing 3 hunters in a canoe in pursuit of 2 black whales and 2 black sea birds, all framed above and below by lilac and yellow bands. | |
