Description | Large round basket with square base and vertical sides, woven entirely of narrow pandanus strips in a plaiting technique (mostly 2/2, with occasional 3/2; 2 encircling bands on upper sides are made by crossing over adjacent warps and adjacent wefts to form a horizontal band before resuming diagonal weave); Rim of basket is scalloped and warp and weft fibers are folded over at rim and woven back into basket; Entire rim is also reinforced by narrow braided row on exterior; At two points on rim opposite each other, warp and weft fibers are extended, forming 4 braided carrying straps that all end in long fringe; Ends of straps are not connected to those on opposite side of basket but their ends can be tied together; Warp and weft fibers form pair of short braids at each basal corner, terminating in short fringes. | |
