| Description | Deep round basket with flat base and vertical sides, woven mostly of pandanus strips in plaiting technique (mostly 1/1 except for band below rim which is more finely woven and includes several plaiting combinations; Warp and weft fibers are folded over at rim and woven back into basket and secured with braided row; At two points along rim, warp and weft fibers are extended, forming 12 very finely braided carrying straps which are quickly pulled together into a single braided handle; As handle lengthens, the weaving material gradually changes from pandanus to breadfruit (?) fiber, finally terminating in long, soft fringe. | |
