Description | Small round basket with flat base and vertical sides, with corresponding round flat lid with low sides that fit over rim of basket; Basket start begins with plaited cedar splints, followed by plain twining over most of the base, using rye grass stems as the weft; Outermost rows of base are woven in 3-strand twining technique, also using rye grass stems as weft; Sides of basket and entire lid are woven in wrapped twining technique, using bear grass leaves as the weft over cedar bark warps; Designs on sides of basket include band of blue and purple open rectangles, arranged in diagonal columns around the mid-section, framed below by blue and yellow bands and above by blue, purple, and yellow bands; Designs on top of lid include dark blue round motif in center that is edged in pink and encircled by a purple band, while design on sides of lid consists of narrow purple band on blue background; NOTE: absence of wide cedar splint forming recessed rim indicates a pre-1910 date. | |
