3-dimensional carved figure in standing position, representing Sochali, a Laguna Pueblo-derived katsina who appears with the Kawaika-a group, including Sio Soyowa and Kawaika; Figure's torso painted red with a wide yellow band extending over the left shoulder on front and back and a wide blue band over the right shoulder on front and back; Right forearm and left leg are yellow and left forearm and right leg are blue; Figure is dressed in white dance kilt and dance sash (the latter painted with embroidered designs), red moccasins, black yarn garters and armlets, and a case mask that is blue on front and white on back; Mask has flat tableta-like ears decorated with tadpole images and single yellow flower on both front and back, a red tubular nose, and red and yellow bars on the cheeks; Bundle of mixed feathers is tied to back of mask, and vestiges of smaller feathers attached to top of mask are evident; Figure carries gourd rattle in right hand; According to Barton Wright (personal communication to Russell Hartman in 2003) this figure is seldom carved because very few carvers are familiar with it. |
