Description | 3-dimensional carving of a male ancestor figure, shown in standing position with his hands at his sides, wearing a plant fiber skirt and an elaborately painted mask that is painted mostly white; His eyes are represented by cowrie shells and he wears a cordage nose ring and several cordage strands in each ear; Top of man's head is stained or painted black; Perched on the man's shoulders with both its feet is a hornbill, carved from the same piece of wood; Hornbill's folded wings are deeply carved and decorated with three loops of native cordage; Cowrie shells are also used for the hornbill's eyes; Hornbill's tail and man's feet are both attached to wide base which was originally stained or painted black, all carved from single piece of wood. | |
