Description Roughly rectangular mat woven in simple diagonal plaiting technique, using narrow pandanus fiber strips as both the warp and weft, which are folded back on themselves along both sides forming a self-selvage; Warp and weft fibers extend beyond the top edge to form short fringe measuring approx. 10 to 12 cm, and also along bottom edge forming long fringe measuring from 50 to 55 cm; Entire mat is undecorated, except for narrow strip of commercially woven red cloth overlaid with dyed pink chicken feathers that is machine sewn along bottom edge (just above fringe); Wider strip of pandanus leaves trimmed with scalloped edges is also machine sewn along bottom edge; “TAUASOSI. T. L.” is printed in black ink in lower corner on reverse and “FAAMATUR Leata” in the opposite corner.
