Description | Ganado Red Navajo-style rug, woven entirely in tapestry weave; Central design is a single series of concentric terraced diamonds in red, white, black, and gray and containing a complex motif of smaller concentric terraced diamonds, all on deep red background; Remainder of design field is filled with motifs related to the center motif of small concentric terraced diamonds that form partial Valero stars; Rug is framed on all four sides with a gray and black border that is embellished with a continuous band of small black crosses; Red spirit line is located in upper right corner; Twining and selvage cords are woven of contrasting gray-green wool yarns; This rug design is copied and modified from a Ganado style rug woven in 1984 by Mae Jim for “Lost and Found Traditions†exhibit, and illustrated in catalog Lost and Found Traditions: Native American Art 1965-1985 (1986, New York, NY: The American Federation for the Arts, pp. 238-239), and also a Klagetoh-style rug woven by Stella Todacheeny, illustrated in Arizona Highways magazine (July 1974, p. 38, #WE-68), which won numerous awards in 1967 at the Arizona State Fair, the Heard Museum Fair, the Museum of Northern Arizona Navajo Show, the Gallup Inter-tribal Indian Ceremonial, and the Navajo Tribal Fair. | |
