Leaf-shaped hand fan woven in simple plaiting technique using both pandanus strips and coconut frond ribs as warp and weft; Several strips of dyed black pandanus fiber and dyed red hibiscus fibers are used for decorative effect; Warp and weft fibers are braided together at lower center of fan, then bundled to form a handle (probably around a wooden stick), which in turn is wrapped with dyed black pandanus and dyed red hibiscus fibers that are also plaited to form an overall red and black checkerboard pattern. |
