Description 3-dimensional carved figure representing Dsahadoldza or Fringe Mouth, a Navajo deity who plays a role during the Navajo ceremony, Night Chant, and others; Figure is shown in standing position with upraised arms stretched out in front; Left side of body is painted black and the right side is painted reddish brown; He wears reddish brown moccasins, a blue skirt with white “T” motifs along its bottom edge, a fox skin tail at the back, and a case mask whose face is painted black on the left and reddish brown on the right while the remainder of the mask is black, topped by a basket with three upright sticks arranged as a pyramid and supporting a feather bundle; Base of mask sports a green collar ruff, representing spruce boughs; Jewelry (all painted) worn by figure includes bracelet on right wrist, concho belt around waist, and red, blue, and white necklace around neck, bow guard on left wrist, one ring on big finger on each hand, and silver buttons on the moccasins; Figure is marked with zigzag lines representing lightning on both lower arms and both lower legs, and with pair of hourglass shapes (representing Born for Water, another Navajo deity) on his front and back just below the shoulders; Figure holds length of rope whose ends are joined by a string and topped with feathers in his left hand and additional feathers in right hand; Signature of “Clitso” is only partially legible on sole of left foot.
