Description Large, rectangular piki tray with the center section woven in a plaiting technique, using split unpeeled sumac shoots for both warp and weft; Outer bark side of the shoots is used in one direction while the inside split side is used in the opposite direction, to produce an overall pattern of concentric diamonds and partial diamonds in both dark and light colors; Warp and weft fibers are grouped into units of 3 and woven in an over-3 / under-3 pattern; Border of tray is woven in a wicker technique using the same materials, with the outer bark side facing up; The final two or three weft rows of the border are woven of whole unpeeled sumac shoots; At the rim, 1 of the 9 elements in each warp group is bent to the left (all others are broken off) and incorporated into a rim bundle that is wrapped in sun-bleached yucca leaves.
