Description A: Single hull outrigger canoe whose hull is carved from single piece of wood; Sides of hull taper towards the bottom to form a very narrow, but flat keel; Ends of hull taper upward slightly, with the upper ends extending well above the rest of the canoe; Short wooden crossbars are positioned regularly across the hull from side to side, with each end extending just through the sides of the hull; Each short crossbar is paired with a second longer one, which extends well out from the hull on one side, forming a platform; Three of these paired bars are exceptionally long and form the framework for the single outrigger, which has additional crossbars lashed to it with coconut fiber cordage; Additional upright black wooden supports are lashed to the framework and their lower ends embedded in the bullet-shaped outrigger; long length of wood is positioned along entire length of upper edge of canoe and secured with short lengths of coconut fiber cordage that are threaded through holes drilled through the length of wood and the hull, itself; Bundle of pandanus fibers are wrapped in a woven pandanus mat and secured to a narrow slat platform atop the outrigger; B: Triangular sail woven of pandanus fibers in a simple plaiting technique, with the cut edges covered with pandanus leaves that are sewn on with thread; “CANTON” (referring to confederated state of Pohnpei) is woven across sail in dyed pink pandanus strips; Long wooden support poles are secured along two sides of the sail, and a third movable pole is secured to the mid-section of one of the poles.
