Description | Chart of 18 different plants (including leaves, flowers, bark, stems and/or berries) used as dye sources by Navajo weavers, arranged around miniature Navajo loom with partially woven Navajo rug whose designs incorporate yarns that have been dyed with the representative plants; A single yarn extends out from each color area of the rug to the particular plant used to produce that color; Plant samples are arranged on cotton batting background and each is identified with a pre-printed label; Plants and rug are mounted inside glass-fronted picture frame; Isabell Myers Deschinny’s mother was Mable Burnside Myers, a well known Navajo weaver and vegetal dye specialist, who made the first such charts for commercial sale ca. 1960s; The Burnside family, from the Pine Springs, AZ area of the Navajo Reservation, worked closely with anthropologist and photographer, John Adair, in the 1930s and 1940s. | |
