Description | Man’s fighting shield, carved from single piece of wood that is roughly rectangular in shape with wide v-shaped notch at the bottom and two equal-sized V-shaped notches at the top; Dorsal side of shield is pronouncedly convex with the highest point being in the center; Shallow carved line starts near each lower corner and gracefully curves up toward center of shield and then curves gently down toward the upper corner along the same edge; Ventral side or reverse of shield is concave over its entire surface; In center of shield (corresponding to thickest portion on front) most of the wood has been carved away to form a recessed vertical hand hold; Two lengths of braided bamboo are wrapped completely around the lower end of the shield, parallel to each other and each is lashed to the shield by means of additional bamboo strips threaded through a series of holes; A similar treatment is added near the top of the shield, except that one only one of the bands is entirely of bamboo, the uppermost band consisting of 6-strands of braided metal wire that is lashed to the shield with bamboo. | |
