Description | Carving of head only representing Sowi-ingwu or Deer katsina, which has power over the rain and usually appears in a group during the plaza dances, accompanied by a Wolf or Mountain Lion katsina; Maskette is carved and assembled from several pieces which are then painted; Face is turquoise colored, (although it should be white), rectangular eyes are black, and elongated snout is black and white; Round ears are white and painted with black and red star motif and wrapped in red wool yarn; Front of maskette also has front visor that is painted red on outer edge and multi colors on top and underside and decorated with several small black feathers that hang pendant from the front and sides; Top of maskette is covered with white wool, and pair of antlers extends from top; 3 large trimmed feathers are attached vertically to back of maskette, along with bundle of smaller feathers behind them; Band of green wool yarn fastened to cotton string around base of maskette simulates a pine bough ruff. | |
