Description | Carving of head only representing Kwahu or Eagle katsina who usually appears during kiva dances in early March, sometimes in the company of Mudhead katsinam, and whose appearance is a prayer for an increase in the number of eagles, which the Hopi honor as guests and which play an important role in Hopi ceremonies; Maskette is carved in several pieces and assembled; Face of maskette is incorrectly painted blue while back and top are painted red (entire case mask should be green); Pointed beak is painted yellow and black; Eyes are incorrectly depicted as bulging black and white eyes, whereas they(should be simply painted as black stripes; Black inverted “V” is painted above beak; Base of back is wrapped with red yarn; Large red tab ears are mounted on either side of maskette; Length of green yarn encircles top of maskette and several gray down feathers are attached to top; Larger bundle of mixed feathers is attached to back of maskette; Green yarn frames base of maskette, representing pine bough ruff worn by this katsina. | |
