Description | Rectangular basket with open top, woven from two halves of a coconut palm frond, with the spine of each half forming the basket’s rim; Each leaf on the frond is split longitudinally but still attached at the spine, and the two half-leaves are then woven in opposite directions in a 2/2 plaiting technique; Warp and weft fibers are turned at the basket’s sides and where they meet on the bottom of the basket, they are braided together on the inside; A braided strap, also woven of coconut frond leaves, is attached inside of basket and on the side near the rim, follows the outside of the basket and then is interwoven with the basket along the bottom, again following the outside of the opposite side and is attached on the inside, opposite the first attachment. Baskets of this type are used for carrying fish. | |
