Description | Breadfruit pounder chipped and ground to shape from a single piece of coral; Broad convex base flare outward to pronounced shoulder, then abruptly tapers inward and gradually rises to form a tall, tapered cylindrical neck or handle, and finally flares outward again to form a broad, flat top about 2/3 the diameter of the base; Top of pounder is carved with four small knobs and the letter “S’ in its center, as a kind of hallmark; All surfaces are carefully shaped and minimally smoothed, except the underside, which is polished very smooth, probably from extended use pounding breadfruit; The polished surface extends up and over the shoulder. | |
