Description | Finely woven hat with wide, flat brim, woven entirely of natural or aniline-dyed (purple) hibiscus fibers that have been split very finely; Weaving is done almost entirely in 2/2 herringbone weave, except for a few rows done in 3/3 weave; Design consists of 4 bands of purple and darker brown, each of which starts at the brim, crosses over the hat’s crown and then loops back again to the brim; A single length of cotton string is incorporated into the weave at the junction of the brim and crown, probably for structural support; Ends of string are left on the exterior. According to the donor, the fine weaving evidenced in this hat is typical of the Mortlocks region. | |
