Description | Hand fan woven of coconut palm ribs (?) pandanus fibers, raffia grass leaves; Handle is made from bundle of coconut ribs whose proximal end are wrapped in plaited pandanus leaves, with a short string loop threaded through the end; The handle ribs are folded back on themselves in pairs, forming loops from which additional ribs radiate to form the underlying structure of the fan which is semi-circular in shape; Warp ribs are woven together with series of dyed purple, black, orange and green pandanus leaves, alternating with bands of undyed raffia grass leaves that are woven in a wrapped-coiled technique; Additional pairs of coconut ribs are attached on both faces of the fan, outlining the outer edge of the fan, and attached to them are short pieces of undyed pandanus leaves, forming a fringe-like border. | |
