Description |
Polynesian mat woven largely in an under one / over one diagonal plaiting technique; Near edges, warps and wefts are split in half and briefly plaited under four / over four, then under two / over two; Some of the fiber ends are twisted along the ends and braided to form an additional reinforcing band along all four edges; Alternating rows of red and dark blue colored fringe woven along all edges, although these fibers are almost completely worn away; Dark secondary weft fibers are woven in an overlay pattern to form a rectangular border just inside the under four / over four design; Center area of mat is plain, as is the reverse face. |
