Description | Bowl with flat base, wide, round body, above mid-level shoulders and wide mouth; Interior and exterior are scraped smooth; Elaborate design is in Sikyatki revival style, a style that was recreated in the 19th century for market purposes; Designs in black and red are painted in slip on the burnished cream-colored background; Designs represent feathers, raindrops, clouds, and dance regalia; A surface burn mark is evidence of the oxidation firing; A ring band break in the line represents a Sipapu or place of human emergence from the Earth; There is a stippling in the design that is similar to an early Hopi potter known as Mrs. Poulisi, thus this piece may be by her; This piece is unsigned. | |
