Description Round basket with fitted lid constructed of baleen strips; Basket has flat base, vertical rounded sides, and inward-sloping rim, and is woven entirely in single rod coiling technique with closely spaced narrow wefts; Basket start on base consists of round flat ivory disk with holes drilled around its perimeter for the baleen; Corresponding flat, round lid is coiled in the same manner as basket, is very shallowly peaked in cross-section and has a short lip inside that fits inside the mouth of the basket; Start of lid is a round flat ivory disk, similar to the basket; Glued onto top of lid’s disk is a carved ivory whale fluke, extending upwards as if the whale is diving; “Gregg” is inscribed and also written in green ink on interior of lid.
