Description 3-dimensional carved figure representing Aya (Rattle Runner) katsina; Appears in the parade of the Bean Dance, Mixed Dance, and as a Runner, a racing katsina which appears during spring dances and runs with men of the villages, who challenge the katsina. Men who defeat the rattle runner are given piki bread while the rattle runner swats losers with yucca; Round head with small corn cob shaped body; Body is yellow with corn kernels delineated with incised dark horizontal and vertical lines and incised dark dots in center of each “kernel”; Thick carved neck ruff in black and white block pattern; Face is blue-green with cylindrical protruding mouth that is red on the sides and blue-green on the front; Facial features are black and white fine line patterns, on both the front and back; Blue-green mask with black line down center and black and white "X" on front and back; Flaring black plus signs overlay thin white X’s on each side of head in lieu of ears; Red conical spire rises from top of crown with two small feathers glued to top, one white with blue tip, the other black with green tip; Black star shape on right side of mask; Unsigned.
