Tawa or Sun Katsina; Three-dimensional carved figure in standing position; Circular face mask with forehead painted red and yellow and the lower part of the face painted blue; Horizontal slit eyes and triangular mouth painted black; There are two vertical black lines on either side of the mouth; The face is surrounded by carved feathers painted brown, yellow, and red; on the back of his head is a cluster of what appear to be feathers; The body is painted brown with red, yellow, and blue designs; Thick carved brown neck ruff; The figure is wearing a kilt that is largely unpainted aside from a black, red, and turquoise design; Figure is also wearing a red sash across the right shoulder that meets a dance sash that is painted with an intricate white, black, turquoise, and red design; Figure is wearing brown moccasins with a red, purple, and black design as well as carved brown ties around the knees and right wrist; on the left wrist, he wears a carved brown bracelet with a grey, black, and turquoise design; in his right hand he carries a rattle painted turquoise and in his left a cone-shaped object with a turquoise stripe design; On his back is a rectangular piece painted red with a white, red, green, and black and yellow stripe design; feathers extend horizontally from the top of the board, meeting in the middle at what appears to be a small cluster of feathers (just below the larger one on the back of the head) and vertically from the bottom; a carved fox skin hangs below the lower feathers; he stands on an unpainted wooden base; No signature. |
