Description Shalako Mana or Shalako Maiden katsina; Three-dimensional carved figure in standing position; There is a red inverted U-shape that extends from one side of the face to the other above the carved circular mouth; Colors are faded on the face but red, turquoise, and possibly yellow stripes descend from the red U to the chin; There is a similar stripe pattern on each cheek but colors were either not painted or have faded; The eyes are rectangular and the left is painted turquoise while the other appears to have been painted either white or yellow; She wears an elaborate tableta painted an intricate white, yellow, turquoise, black, and red pattern that features arrows extending upward and to the left and right as well as three carved white and black feathers at the top and two on each side; There is a carved brown tie around her forehead, possibly to secure the tableta; She has long black hair and is wearing carved turquoise, red, and white feathers around her neck; She wears what appears to be a brown, red, and black shawl over her shoulders a dress of brown and black feathers that extends to her ankles; A green and black dress is visible beneath the feathers near the bottom; she wears white moccasins and stands on an unpainted, circular wooden base; Signed “Pat Howesa” on bottom.
