Carved mask; Low relief, wall hanging mask carved from whale vertebra; Face depicted is generally round, with a triangular chin; Prominent nose and open, angled mouth showing teeth are carved in relief, while almond-shaped eye sockets are countersunk; Narrow diameter hole is carved in each eye socket to represent pupils, extending all the way through to the reverse side of the carving; Pair of holes at bottom of nose to represent nostrils also extend all the way through carving; Single hole drilled through top of mask with a short loop of tanned skin threaded through. |
