Description |
Long, narrow, conical open-weave basketry trap made of palm fiber; The narrow end is not woven closed, but tied shut with a band of rubber; Used to catch small mammals, especially sengis; Dusky sengis (Elephantulus fuscus), the species with which this trap was caught, utilize distinctive paths through the brush; The traps are laid along these trails and the animals are flushed out by people beating the brush; As the sengis dash along the trail away from the humans, they are easily caught by such traps when they bolt into the funnel and are unable to back out; The animals are extracted by untying the rubber band and opening the end of the trap. |
