| Description | Small agawen, or snail gathering, basket from northern Philippines; Basket has a flat base and high shoulder that slopes to a wide mouth; Basket is set on a square wooden base; Basket is attached to base at the four corners by “ropes†of plaited weaving that extends to rim of the basket mouth on the exterior of the basket, and is intertwined with decorative pattern of interconnected woven circles on the shoulder; There is a single band of decorative waved twining in a lighter material similar to the decorative and plaited elements; Apart from these design elements, the basket is constructed from a dark plant material in plain twining technique, with the wide warp fibers visible under the thin weft fibers; These baskets usually have a thin carrying strap attached to the plaited “ropes†however the strap on this basket is not present. | |
